About the artist

Don Freeman is an American photographer and filmmaker. His photographs have been featured in French and American Vogue, The World of Interiors, Architectural digest, Martha Stewart Living and others. His fine art has been exhibited in galleries and collections worldwide.

His documentary Art House, 2015 (First Run Features) is a feature length documentary based on his book Artists Handmade Houses, 2011 (Abrams), visiting over 12 historic homes created and imagined by artists, including Frederic Edwin Church, Wharton Esherick, George Nakashima, and Russel Wright.  He has been commissioned to photograph the home, studio and gardens of Daniel Chester French  and most recently Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

His other books include Styling Nature (2018) Rizzoli, and Ted Muehling (2008) Rizzoli. His fine art, self-published book My Familiar Dream (1994) is in the permanent collections at The Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Getty Museum.

Living in New York beginning in the mid-80’s, to Paris in the early 90’s, and now upstate New York, his photography uses traditional techniques (mostly black and white film) and is then manipulated either in the darkroom or on the computer. His recent work incorporates hand drawing, watercolor and plant pressing reliefs to add additional texture, depth and color.

“My fine art photography challenges the way a person sees the world in which I travel, the objects I love, memories and experiences that are personal to me. They represent dreams, delusions and sometimes madness. I use my archival images as well as my new work to express my lack of or talent for words. They are my poetry.”
